Mistubishi 4G63 - 2.0l DOHC Turbo

8/10/98 - 6/10/99

-estimated time of death

UPDATE 08/015/99: Home Again

Josh at Road /// Race Engineering drove Mike's car home August 16th. The alarm had to be destroyed in order to start the car with they key. Mike is planning on returning to Oregon with the car August 22nd. With a careful anaysis they only item that was stolen would be Mike's Greddy Shift Knob which "was not on the car when it arrived" at RRE.

UPDATE 08/01/99: Resurection

After spending a month at Road /// Race, a new 4G63 has been transplanted into the DSM. The functional parts off the old motor are being transplanted on to the new. This includes the alternator, turbo, intake manifold, throttle body and an assortment of other parts. The spare parts will be used to pay for labor.

The motor is up and running. However RRE ran into a problem when starting the car. The alarm disabled

UPDATE 07/01/99: Dead Stuff

"I have seen plenty of other cars drop valves into the combustion chamber just not a Mitsubishi yet."

-Mike W. Road Race Engineering

Unfortunately, Mike DSM died about a month ago. He was on the freeway, and it just "turned off". That's the best way he could describe it. So of course, he had it shipped down to Road///Race so they could properly diagnose what was wrong with it. Mike had first taken it to the dealer, but they had just guessed it was caused by slippage or failure on behalf of the timing belt. Mike and Mike at RRE felt/hoped otherwise.

Of course, the timing belt was fine, it had not jumped or moved. Luckily, the other valves did not hit the pistons. However, since the number one cylinder was missing the valves, pieces of the damage got under the other valves in other cylinders, causing them not to seal. It just looks like bad luck.

Now, Mike will be looking for yet another Japanese motor to install. Hopefully Road///Race will be able to pull some of the smouldering remains of the dead motor off to help for the installation of the new motor.

*-* Warning *-*

The pictures are pretty gruesome, so you might want to put the kids to bed before looking at them.
